Black Lawyers Matter

Diversity Programmes

At the Stephen James Partnership, we offer programmes for Black and mixed-race Black candidates to increase their access and insights into law across a range of means-tested and academically selective programmes under the ‘Black Lawyers Matter’ umbrella:

Mentoring

We match candidates 1-to-1 with a mentor in the legal sector based on goals, interests and commonalities, etc. for a 12-month mentorship.  The goals are set by the mentee, and the mentorship includes reverse mentoring for the mentor to understand the perspective of a Black aspiring lawyer/junior legal professional.  Our mentoring programme is not academically selective in order to remove barriers to entry, and we are on hand to support and advise mentors and mentees throughout.

Vacation Schemes

A vacation scheme access programme within which law firms receive a shortlist of Black and mixed-race Black applicants.  The firm then has an obligation to place a minimum number of applicants through onto their own vacation scheme.  These opportunities are often academically selective as the requirements are set by the firm.  We advise clients on best practice including advising on mitigating circumstances and giving feedback, and we support candidates throughout.

We also offer a package for legal teams who do not have traditional vacation schemes but want to set candidate requirements.

Internships

We match candidates to paid internships with law firms and in-house legal teams.  These opportunities are not academically selective to remove barriers to entry and instead are means-tested to help candidates who are proactive and passionate but often overlooked.  We handle the shortlisting and selection process and work with the law firms and in-house legal teams to advise on best practice for the internships. We also support candidates throughout.

Candidate support

As part of these programmes, we offer a wide range of bespoke support to engage candidates in a meaningful way and improve retention.  As a Black-owned business our work is authentic, and those that work on these programmes are Black or have Black heritage.
